The clients had lived with a bathroom that just wasn’t up to their needs for a decade and were ready for an upgrade. They also requested to have a media room created out of an attic room that, while not large, would also have to pull double duty as a guest bedroom.
The media room needed to accommodate large groups of friends for special viewing events of a favorite series or movie. This sparked the idea of a Moroccan inspired gathering space with lounge-y low seating, lots of cushions, and layered patterns but we would be interpreting this in a masculine and contemporary way.
We had to maximize seating and yet still make sure the room could be used as a guest bedroom for frequent visitors. This was accomplished with 2 queen sized sleeper sofas as well as thick cushions on the built in bench that can double as a platform bed.
A deep gray was chosen for the walls and a plush gray wool rug covers most of the floor, but to keep the room from feeling dark and cave-like the sofas and bench seating were kept light. Even in a room that will see a lot of use with food and drinks the clients don’t have to worry about spills during movie nights as all fabrics were chosen as stain repellant and ultra durable.
The modern Moroccan inspired diamond pattern on the rug is echoed in the roman shade fabric. Other patterns are interspersed throughout but kept subtle. The front of the built in bench seat was tiled with a textured limestone chevron pattern, the patterned fabric for the ottomans was an early favorite pick, and various pillow fabric patterns are layered but not overwhelming.
The sloped walls of the attic room left space to insert built-ins creating storage for guests as well as media equipment. Theater appropriate sconce lighting was installed along the walls with glimmers of gold that pick up the metallic accents of the brass side tables.
We wanted the room to feel like a space you can really relax in; comfy back pillows on the bench seating, ottomans to put your feet up, and a large sheepskin rug for those that prefer to lounge on the floor during movies.
The master bathroom was transformed from a poorly laid out Victorian inspired room with zero storage to a spacious masculine spa bathroom.
Where previously there stood a gold footed clawfoot tub on wood floors now is a spacious contemporary steam shower with teak floor mats and 2 generous bench seats; one stone and one teak that can be folded down when not in use for a large shower area.
His and His sinks and mirrors along a custom wall mounted vanity with lots of storage replaced a single small pedestal sink. A tall cabinet on the opposite wall was designed for towels, double laundry hampers, and even the cat’s litter box in the base.
The mix of wood tones, organic limestone split face tile, white countertops, and bronze metallic tile accents, create a contemporary space of texture, strong lines, and contrast of finishes.
