The clients were happy to find an apartment in Manhattan with ample space and an outdoor terrace area but it was dated and dark. The goal was to bring in light and make it a contemporary yet comfortable space that they could relax in and host family gatherings.
We discussed keeping some elements such as the original parquet floors but it was decided that to do the space justice we really had to start with a blank slate. There were limits to which walls could be moved or removed and there was no raising the 8’ ceilings so we had to get creative in making the spaces as light filled as possible. Creating light soffits in the bedrooms, adding glass transoms, and raising dropped ceilings in the bathrooms. Reflective surfaces were used to keep some sparkle and light moving around the spaces. The entry has a glass bead wallpaper accent wall and the hallway a softly shimmering silver wallpaper. Light soft grays and whites were used throughout with accents of bright colors to liven up the spaces.
Bathrooms were enlarged, trim and casework throughout was modernized or eliminated, doorways were heightened, and numerous doors made into pockets or “hidden” flush with walls to keep clean lines. The crew of George Biebel Construction did an amazing job on all the details.
A re-design of the much neglected terrace was part of the project. We incorporated new privacy fencing, custom planters, and built in bench seating and collaborated with New Eco Landscapes on the perfect mix of plantings to make the space a lush and inviting place to spend time.
Furnishings were selected to be comfortable and durable as well as beautiful and unique with custom pieces mixed in throughout. The art is a mix of pieces selected from New York and California artists befitting this bi-costal couple.
